Traffic Fatalities
The number of traffic fatalities in Nye County is low in regards to actual
numbers. In 2006, Nye County had 19 fatalities and the State of Nevada had
432. The state total represents less than 1% of the number of accident
fatalities that occurred in the entire nation, however, based on population
Nevada is above the national average in fatalities at 17.31 per 100,000 of
population compared to the 14.24 national average. Compared to nearby states,
Nevada is in the middle, with a higher fatality rate than California and Utah,
but lower than Arizona and New Mexico. Some of the major contributing factors
to a high traffic fatality rate are two-lane roads (of which Nevada has many),
a 24-hour lifestyle, and a rapidly growing population base.
