Agriculture Crops

Crops

Agriculture is an important industry in the state of Nevada. Nye County realizes the importance of farming to its economy. As of the 2002 Agricultural Census (census is taken every 5 years) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Nye County had 172 farms with total cropland acreage of 41,208.

The main crop produced by Nye County farms is hay. Alfalfa hay is the predominant hay type grown. Alfalfa has the highest feeding value of the common hay types and is drought tolerant.

In 2005, Nye County farms harvested 14,000 acres of hay, with a yield of 5.3 tons per acre, making total production approx. 74,400 tons of hay. The total harvested acreage has lingered between 11,000 and 16,000 annually over the past 15 years. Again alfalfa hay was the majority of each annual crop with other hay types varying greatly from year to year (2,000 to 8,000 harvested acres).
